Letter: Learned a great deal at Fairplay Store

Comments re photo 83924 Rosenbaum Fairplay Store and Post Office

By Mike Watson

Many great memories come rushing back with this photograph of the Fairplay Store of Mr. Stanley Rosenbaum. Growing up on Earls' Ridge, just a little south of Fairplay, we were often at this store for necessities and more. More being neighbors sitting a while to talk over the events of the week, crops, cattle, and a little ancient history from time to time.

I well recall such notables as Uncle Tommy Samuell, Gillum Harvey, Joe McClister, Haskell Samuell, Garvin Spoon, Mackie Spoon, Bud Grider, our own uncle, Roy Bunch, Finis Albert Harvey, George Hill, Carl Turner, Bill Hadley, Ol Darnell, Dewey Turner, Oval Pettey, and of course Mr. Stanley R. I now realize I learned a great deal of history by paying attention to these men of my youth, and more, too.

Creed Lacy was our bus driver nearly my entire school career, and lived just across the road from us. With Mackie and Tam, the Smith children, and other kids in the neighborhood, we rode bus No. 11 for many thousands of miles. Always stopping morning and afternoon at Fairplay Store to await Pres Mitchum's bus and exchange passengers.

Hard to believe this is all a half-century ago! Thanks for posting the photo David Rosenbaum. --Mike
