Sheriff's vehicles set in special called Fiscal Court meeting

By Tiffany Kessler

Minor Mix Up with Vehicle Specs Prompts Executive Session

With a department in desperate need of vehicles, Sheriff Josh Brockman is eager to see the first two purchases arrive and get on the road. However, a small snafu in the process created the need for County Judge Gale Cowan and magistrates to enter executive session during a special called meeting.

In April, Fletcher Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram out of Franklin, IN came in with the lowest bid at $23,775 for a 2019 Dodge Charger. A motion was made and the offer was accepted. According to Sheriff Brockman, there were a few options concerning vehicle specifications that had accidentally been read wrong and left out.

In order to remedy the problem with Fletcher and obtain the needed specs, the price jumped slightly to $24,550 - still under any other bid that had originally been submitted. Although the additional money will come out of ABC funds and excess fees from the Sheriff's Department, it still required the fiscal court's approval. All voted in favor.

Road Flex Funds

Judge Cowan has been in contact with Representative Bam Carney concerning state discretionary funds or "flex money" for roads. She informed the court that currently it looked as if each magistrate would receive $37,000 to use in their district.

Magistrates are currently working on their needs list to submit to Judge Cowan and Rep. Carney. There were no votes taken on this matter considering the process is in the discussion phase.

All Adair County magistrates were present and include: Chris Reeder (District 4), Sammy Baker (3), Daryl Flatt (2), Harold Burton (1), Billy Coffey (5), Greg Caldwell (6), Terry Hadley (7). Meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6pmCT in the basement of the Adair Courthouse Annex.

*The May meeting will still be held on May 14, however the time has been changed to 4pm (CT) due to the Chamber of Commerce Banquet being held that night.
