City Walking Tour and Open House to be held 18-19 May 2019 Trabue-Russell House featured in Preservation Kentucky Tour 120. Columbia/Adair County is included among only 18 of the 120 counties in the state. An open house will be part of a City Walking Tour on May 18 and 19, 2019. By Tiffany Kessler Atop Jamestown Hill sits the historic Trabue Russell home, built in 1821 by Daniel Trabue, one of the original founders of Columbia. Owned by the City of Columbia, recent improvements and clean-up projects have been completed thanks to dedicated volunteer Vonnie Kolbenschlag. For years, she has stressed the importance of the location and its heritage and has remained diligent in her efforts to upkeep the property. Kolbenschlag had assessed the home and the efforts needed for it to look its best. Mayor Pam Hoots and the city council worked with her to ensure proper labor was provided to help check off the "To Do" lists. During the past few months the location has seen pressure washing, gutters cleaned, debris removed, landscape trimmed, and coming soon will be the installation of a new flag pole. Some improvements inside the house were made earlier this year and help visitors to enjoy their time browsing an interesting collection of local memorabilia on display. Eager for the community to view the historic home, Kolbenschlag submitted the location to Preservation Kentucky Tour 120 - a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving and promoting buildings, structures, and sites throughout the Commonwealth. Columbia/Adair County was included in only 18 of the 120 counties in the state. Kolbenschlag was in attendance during Monday night's city council meeting and thanked them for their help with the Trabue-Russell Home. The official open house will be held during the hours reserved for the Columbia Walking Tour. The event is set for Saturday, May 18, 9am - 4pm (CT) and Sunday, May 19, 1pm - 5pm. Kolbenschlag encouraged council members and those in the community to stop by and enjoy the spot which overlooks the town. Refreshments will be served. Free walking tour booklets, Walk through the Years in Columbia, are available in advance at these three locations: Columbia/Adair County Tourism Chamber Building, the Adair County Library, and Columbia City Hall.
