Big turnout for Crappie Tournament despite weather By Darrell Van Vactor/Ron Presley Crappie anglers from seven states traveled to Holmes Bend to participate in a Crappie USA (CUSA) Super Event on April 19th and 20th. Darrell Van Vactor, CUSA Operations Manager, sent special thanks to Sue Stivers with Columbia/Adair County CVB and Joey, Kelly and the staff at Holmes Bend Marina for hosting the event. "Green River Lake is becoming one of the premier stops on the Crappie USA Trail," said Van Vactor. "And for good reason. It offers great fishing, unequaled hospitality, scenic areas all around the lake, and lots of protected areas to hide in on windy days. Green River will also be the home of the 2020 Crappie USA Classic." One-Hundred Forty crappie anglers faced high winds and heavy rain on opening day at the Green River event. The bite was on and all but one boat weighed in and most had a limit. Kris and Terry Mann fished through the inclement weather to take the day one lead in the Pro Division with 8.61 pounds. Gregory Oaks and Shane Yocum held down the lead in the Amateur Division with 7.35 pounds. Day two of the Super Event started off with snow on the north end of Green River Lake. It quickly turned to a steady downpour as day two got underway. A cold rain continued throughout the day with air temps in the mid-40s. A total of 70 boats fished the Green River event--17 in the Pro Division and 53 in the Amateur Division. A total of $14,730 was distributed to the winners. Amateur Division Results The D & M Fishing team of Robert Massey and Todd Dalton claimed the top spot in the Amateur Division at Green River. The Somerset, KY team weighed a two-day bag of 16.09 pounds to earn $1,800. They added a $250 Ranger Cup Bonus and $415 for second big fish. The team was casting jigs in the state park area to catch their fish on Friday. They switched to pulling Jenko crankbaits on Saturday. They used chartreuse/black and white/chartreuse cranks in 40 foot of water to complete their winning strategy. "On day one we focused on some laydown trees and brush piles," reported Massey. We were fishing in 25 feet of water casting and jigging Bobby Garland Baby Shad in various colors. We caught around forty keeper fish by 8:30 am with the 7 biggest weighing around 7 pounds." "At that time, we decided to move off those spots and hopefully save some fish for day two," continued Massey. "We also made the decision not to fish the other spots we had picked out to leave them for day two. At around 10:30 we had not upgraded any and decided not to take the chance on any of our fish dying so we weighed in around 11:00 am with 6.87 pounds. That put us in third place on day one." On Saturday they went back to the area they had fished on day one. Unfortunately, with the cold front moving in the bigger fish just weren't biting. After about two hours they had 7 fish but no significant weight. They decided to go to their back up plan of pulling crankbaits. "We started pulling Jenko Crappie Cranks over 40 feet of water," explained Massey. "We were targeting suspended fish at around 20 feet deep along a bank where we had caught several fish in practice. Within a 50-yard pull, we had a 1.90-pound fish which ended up being the second-place big fish. In the next 50 yards we had a 1.80-pound fish." Deciding not to risk the health of those two fish they took them to the scales. They went back and focused on the same bank and fished it for the rest of the day. "We caught five more fish weighing 5.52 pounds," concluded Massey. "That gave us a day two total of 9.22 pounds and a tournament total of 16.09 pounds. Chartreuse Tiger and Siberian Tiger were the Crappie Cranks that worked best for us." Glen Ward from Elizabethtown, KY and Donnie Miller from Sonora, KY brought a bag of 14.07 pounds to the scales to claim the second spot. Their two days of crappie fishing earned them a check for $1,000.00. Ward and Miller found fish close to the dam at various water depths. They targeted them with double minnow rigs and purple Jenko jigs. They also caught a lot of crappies, estimating 80 to 90 for the weekend. They reported that the fish were holding right on the bottom in cover. Third place in the Amateur Division went to Robert Leach and Larry Holtzclaw from Eubanks, KY. Their two-day bag weighed 13.34 pounds and earned them $600.00. Leach and Holtzclaw fished around the Corp of Engineers Park. They were dead lining minnows in 8 to 12 feet of water. They caught about 300 fish during the two-day event. Greg Oaks from Waynesburg, KY and Shane Yocum / Zack Moore from Hustonville, KY, weighed 13.03 pounds to take the fourth spot and earn $500.00. They chose the State Park area to pull crankbaits over brush piles. They were pulling in 18 to 20 foot of water. They used orange, chartreuse, and other bright colored cranks to land around 100 crappies for the weekend. The Big Fish Winner was Cory Cambron and Levi Rowe from Springfield, KY. They had a 1.92-pound slab to take the BF title and earn $965.00 Pro Division Results The top spot at Green River went to Shawn and Travis Gore and Joey Peck. The three-man team from Almo, KY brought a two-day weight of 16.37 pounds to the scales and earned a check for $3000. They added the $500 Ranger Cup and $100 Jenko bonuses. Shawn, Travis and Joey fished the State Park area in 8 to 12 feet of water. They were spider rigging Jenko and Knothead jigs on suspended fish. They used red/chartreuse and black/chartreuse jigs to catch about 50 fish per day. Second place went to the father/son team of Terry and Kris Mann from Mt Sterling, KY. The B'n'M Poles team weighed a two-day total of 15.72 pounds to earn $2,000. The numbers game was on for Team Mann. The team fished from Robertson Creek to Holmes Bend in 8 to 12 foot of water. They were targeting white crappie using B'n'M poles to single pole jig. They used Crappie Magnet Slab Curley jigs in various colors to catch an unbelievable 250 crappies on Friday and 100 on Saturday. David Jones and Corey Thomas took the third spot on Green River. Jones from Columbia, KY and Thomas from Jamestown KY weighed a bag of 15.26 pounds to earn a check for $1000 and a Talon Bonus of $250. Jones and Thomas fished in the area of the dam where they found large numbers of crappie. They were spider rigging in 8 to 14 feet of water. They used a combination of baby bass colored jigs and B'n'M double minnow rigs to catch a whopping 250 to 300 fish for the weekend. Fourth place went to Steve Ferguson from Puryear, TN and Frank Finley from Murray, KY. They teamed up to bring 14.28 pounds to the scales and earn a check for $200. Ferguson and Finley fished the upper end of the lake in 8 to 14 foot of water. Like many others, they caught a huge number of crappies.
