LWC Baseball hosts CU for final home conference series

Lindsey Wilson baseball hosts Campbellsville University for their final home Mid-South Conference series of the 2019 season.

With forecasted weather in the Columbia area, the series has been slated to take place on Thursday and Monday. The series is scheduled for a 3pmCT start on Thursday with a doubleheader to follow on Monday set for 2pmCT from Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

Before Thursday's action, seven senior student-athletes will be honored for their contributions to the LWC baseball program. Those honored are Zak Mizell, Manny Chavarria, Kelvin Guzman, Francisco Arias, Steven Calderon, Jordan Gardner, and Chris Koutsoubos.


The Blue Raiders (7-29, 2-10 MSC) are coming off a tough 15-1 defeat against No. 2-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. Vincent Boils was the lone run-scorer for LWC, connecting on a solo-shot over the left field fence in the seventh inning.

Calderon leads the Blue Raiders' bats with a .323 batting average. Calderon has notched 29 RBI's and has crossed home 27 times this season. Calderon also leads the team in doubles (9) and home runs (7). Austin Rayno and Calderon both split the lead in total hits at 40 apiece.

As a team, Lindsey Wilson is batting .266 so far this season, scoring 175 runs and recording 296 hits. The Blue Raiders have a .368 on-base percentage as well as a .388 slugging percentage.

From the mound, LWC holds a 9.58 team ERA. Ethan Escue has seen the most time on the bump, pitching for 40.0 innings for a 7.43 ERA. Jose Diana continues to grasp the lead in strikeouts with 34 in 32.2 innings pitched.

Campbellsville (24-15, 8-4 MSC) are visiting Columbia after splitting two games with Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on the road. The Tigers won game one 6-3 before dropping game two 4-8.

The Tigers have outscored their opponents 314-165 this season while batting for .315 on 400 hits. Tyler Deason leads the squad with a .372 batting average and has managed a team-leading 45 hits and 42 RBI's.

Marco Murillo leads Campbellsville from the bump with a 1.50 ERA. Murillo has seen 30.0 innings of action and has picked up three wins in the process. Anthony Arias leads the squad in total innings pitched with 48.1 innings under his belt. Arias holds a 3.35 ERA and has tallied 66 strikeouts in his nine appearances.

As a team, the Tigers' pitching corps carries a 3.69 ERA and has amassed 323 strikeouts in the 39 games played.

For the overall series, Campbellsville has won eight of the last ten matchups between the two programs. The Blue Raiders were swept by the Tigers on the road back on April 20-21, during the 2018 campaign.
