Fire Truck Gets Green Light from City Council

By Tiffany Kessler

Columbia Fire Chief Mike Glasgow addressed the City Council this week concerning the station's dire need for two new vehicles - a pumper truck and a light body rescue truck.

Chief Glasgow initially presented the request in January with the committee that had included council members Ronald P. Rogers and Mark Harris.

The current pumper in operation is 33 years old and has an open cab. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires closed cabs for safety purposes.

The fire station and committee members agreed the needs were valid and requested a bid from a family owned company that they had worked with for many years. Sutphen, located in Columbus, OH, has been in business since 1890.

"This will be the third truck we've purchased from them," said Glasgow. "The main reason is for their awesome service. We've had excellent results working with them over the years."

Each year, the City of Columbia sets aside $25,000 to be used strictly toward the purchase of fire department vehicle(s).

"This has helped us tremendously over the years," Chief Glasgow added.

During the meeting, the council was asked to sign a contract to order the engine. With 90+ pages of specifications, Sutphen should have the engine built in roughly 12 months.

Chief Glasgow suggested the city make use of a payment option that the company provides. For full pre-payment Sutphen offers a discount of $10,074, leaving the final price of the engine at $493,651.

Council member Ronald Rogers made a motion to accept the proposal, council member Craig Dean seconded the motion - all voted in favor. The City of Columbia will be responsible for the payment to Sutphen within in the next 30 days.

Chief Glasgow ended by saying, "Hopefully this will be the last truck we'll have to buy for a while. It took 33 years to wear out the one we're replacing. We want you all to come and see it when it comes in."

Additional Council Comments

A motion was made by June Parson and seconded by Sharon Payne to pay half of the annual Fourth of July fireworks display, not to exceed $2,500. All other council members voted in favor. It has become tradition for the city and county to share the cost each Independence Day.

Council member Dr. Ronald Rogers added a location to Mayor Hoots list of streets which are ready to be bid for new blacktop: Elm Street to Guthrie Street (Councilman Rogers made it clear that though this was near his home, the request was for his neighbors which have mentioned the need).

Council member Linda Waggener recognized the achievements of the local school academic teams and their successes. Waggener also mentioned that the Red Cross has free smoke alarms and will inspect your home and install them. Those interested in the smoke alarms may contact her or City Hall.

All council members were present, including: Craig Dean, Linda Waggener, Dr. Ronald Rogers, Sharon Payne, June Parson, and Mark Harris.

Regular meetings for the Columbia City Council are held the first Monday of each month at 6pmCT located in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Meetings are open to the public.
