Earth Day Activities at CU cover the whole month of April By Alexandria Swanger, communications assistant, Office of University Communications CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University's Earth Day festivities have expanded to take place throughout the month of April. Different university departments including theology, environmental science and student activities have combined to offer students and the public more opportunities to observe Earth Day and all that it stands for. Trent Creason, director of student activities, said the goal was to "seek to increase awareness of Earth Stewardship and encourage student engagement with nature." The events began April 2, 2019 with Dr. Matthew Sleeth presenting a two-part series about Creation Care, "Reforesting the Faith." He then spoke at Ransdell Chapel as part of the chapel series, open to the public each Wednesday, on April 3 about sabbath living, "24/6 in a 24/7 World." The events will continue as follows: On Thursday, April 4 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. there will be a "Sabbath Living Mini-Retreat" with Bill Hughes at Clay Hill Memorial Forest. Earth Day festivities will be on Tuesday, April 23 and will begin at 10 a.m. at the Turner Log Cabin where local Cub Scouts will help plant sunflowers on campus, and the George Howell Earth Stewardship Awards will be given along with the Nature Photography Awards. Tuesday, April 23 through Thursday, April 25 there will be an Earth Day Worship Service led by the School of Theology at noon each day in the Ransdell Chapel. This service will be led by students and faculty from the School of Theology. On Friday, April 26 at 4 p.m. there will be an educational event led by the Kentucky Forestry Service about forest management that will involve a demonstration of thinning of a small section of Walnut trees. This event will be located at the Hoffmann House at 305 Collins Lane, Campbellsville. On Saturday, April 27 there will be a Wildflower Hike at Clay Hill Memorial Forest led by Mikayla Groce, who is serving with the Americorps Kentucky as an Environmental Education Leadership Corps member. All events are open and free to the public. For more information regarding the events, contact the Office of University Communications at (270) 789-5004.
