Rayno shines in Game Two against Pikeville

Lindsey Wilson baseball splits Thursday's Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Pikeville (Ky.) at Egnew Park. LWC would drop game one 7-5 before leveling the series at one game apiece with a 15-10 victory.

Seth Price led the Blue Raiders (7-19, 2-6 MSC) in game one with two hits and three RBI's as Austin Rayno lit up the scoreboard in game two, going 3-for-4 with eight RBI's on three home runs. For the day, both teams would record 21 hits apiece while the Blue Raiders outscored the Bears 20-17.

Lindsey Wilson returns Friday to take on Pikeville for the final game of the three-game series at NoonCT from Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.


Game One: Lindsey Wilson 5, Pikeville 7
Pikeville mounted a 7-0 lead with four runs in the second inning and three runs in the fifth. The Bears tallied three hits in the second as they would produce one hit and use a Lindsey Wilson error in the fifth to produce three runs.

Lindsey Wilson would remain scoreless until the bottom of the eighth with Jed Arend knocking one out of the park to make the score 7-1.

The Blue Raiders were able to take advantage of some pitching miscues from the Bears in ninth, scoring four runs. Derek Marrufo and Steven Calderon reached on walks before Seth Price hit a three-run home run to make the score 7-4.

Dillan Saunders got on base with a single to left field later in the inning. Saunders then advanced to second via a stolen base before Tyler Maskill was able to connect on a single to shallow right-field to push Saunders in to score the final run of the game.

The Bears outhit the Blue Raiders 8-7 for the game. Pikeville also managed seven RBI's, while Lindsey Wilson finished with five.

Kelvin Guzman started on the bump for Blue Raiders, throwing for 1.2 innings before being followed up by Jose Diana. Diana recorded six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work before ultimately seeing his time on the mound come to a close. Bradley Hines and Vicent Boils also made appearances in the game.

Bruce Bell picked up the win, starting for the Bears while Aaron Hedgecock was able to grab his first save of the season.

Game two: Lindsey Wilson 15, Pikeville 10
Lindsey Wilson used the long ball to open game two jumping out to an 8-1 advantage after three innings.

Calderon recorded the first of four Blue Raider home runs for the game in the first inning, scoring two runs. During the second, Rayno knocked out a solo home run to advance LWC's lead to 3-0, on his first of three consecutive home runs during his at-bats.

Pikeville answered with one run in the third inning before Lindsey Wilson would produce five runs to take an 8-1 lead. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with Tyler Maskill scoring off a walked batter. Rayno was able to take advantage of the situation and connected for a grand slam to take the seven-run lead.

Pikeville took another run back at the top of the fourth inning before Lindsey Wilson poured seven more runs across the plate to take a 15-2 lead.

Price and Saunders both singled to open the inning with Maskill doubling to push Price home. Chris Koustoubus was then able to connect on a double to push two runs in. Koustoubus was able to score off a misplayed grounder. Rayno connected for a three-run homer to make it his third of the game and retired the inning with a 13-run lead.

After a scoreless fifth, Pikeville would take back one run in the sixth while holding Lindsey Wilson without a run for the second consecutive inning heading into the seventh.

The Bears clawed back from the double-digit deficit, scoring seven runs in the top half of the inning but were not able to take advantage of the Blue Raider pitching struggles.

Ethan Escue snagged the win, starting on the mound while throwing for 5.0 innings. Gerard Mendez put in an inning's worth of work before Austin Streble and Vincent Boils would both make appearances.

The Blue Raiders closed out the game outhitting the Bears 14-13.
