LWC Baseball drops final two games against Cumberland By Clayton Barefield

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team drops game two and three of their Mid-South Conference weekend series against Cumberland (Tenn.) at Egnew Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Phoenix (20-9, 5-1 MSC) were able to grab game one 7-5 as well as game two 8-3.

Cumberland outhit the Blue Raiders (5-18, 1-5 MSC) 21-to-14 on the day, including a total of 13 RBI's to Lindsey Wilson's seven.


GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 5, Cumberland 7

After two scoreless innings, Lindsey Wilson would open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with Steven Calderon pushing a run in with a double down the left field line to give LWC the 1-0 lead.

Cumberland responded in the fourth with a run of their own and held the Blue Raiders scoreless to make the game 1-1 going into the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, the Phoenix were able to produce two runs to take a 3-1 lead from a double and a sacrifice fly-out. Lindsey Wilson matched Cumberland's runs with two of their own coming off the bat of Seth Price who hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to tie up the ball game.

The Phoenix were able to tag on one run in the top of the sixth and kept the Blue Raider from producing any sort of spark in the bottom half of the inning.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh before Lindsey Wilson would take a five four lead in the bottom of the eighth scoring two runs.

Cumberland was able to produce offence in the top of the ninth to tack on three more runs to eventually close the game with a final score of 7-5.

Price led the Blue Raiders with three hits and two RBI's to finish the game.

Ethan Escue started for Lindsey Wilson on the mound, pitching for five innings. Escue gave up five hits and three runs. Jose Diana and Francisco Arias both made appearances during the game. Diana pitched for three innings while Arias finished the game, pitching one inning.

GAME 2: Lindsey Wilson 3, Cumberland 8

Lindsey Wilson opened the scoring in the first inning with one run. Two scoreless innings would pass before Cumberland managed three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

Cumberland dominated the seventh inning tacking on five more runs. Lindsey Wilson was able to add two runs in the bottom of the inning but could not produce any more offense to extend the game.

The Blue Raiders finished the game with five hits against Cumberland's 11. Derek Marrufo and Seth Price led the batting for Lindsey Wilson one hit and an RBI each.

Chandler Harnage started for the Blue Raiders, pitching 6.1 innings giving up seven hits and five runs while recording four strikeouts. Jose Diana and Austin Strebel made appearances as well.
