LWC Softball sweeps MSC series against Cumberlands

The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team completed the four-game series sweep of Mid-South Conference opponent Cumberlands (Ky.) at Marilyn D. Sparks Park on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Raiders won the first game 6-2 and then used a come from behind 5-4 victory in game two to complete the sweep.

Callum Pilgrim led the Blue Raiders at the plate as she recorded four hits and two RBI's across the two games as Breanna Clark added three hits and two runs scored.

The Blue Raiders continue MSC action here at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY when they welcome Pikeville (KY) to Columbia starting at 2pmCT on Friday and at NoonCT on Saturday.


Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 6, Cumberlands 2

Cumberlands would score in the first inning to take an early lead but the Blue Raiders responded in the bottom half of the inning. Kalli Harris would drive home Pilgrim, who led off the inning with a single, from third to level the score. Harris reached base on a Patriot error that then allowed Zakiya Sizemore to score from second base.

The Blue Raiders would add three more runs in the second inning. Pilgrim would single to right field scoring Luckett from second. Pilgrim would then steal second base, as a wild throw by the catcher would allow Clark to score. Jaydee Boursaw would then reach on a misplayed grounder by the Patriots second baseman that would allow Pilgrim to score the final run of the inning.

Cumberlands battled in the third inning as they were able to produce three hits that resulted in one run, trimming the LWC advantage to 5-2.

Samantha Luckett would record the game's final run in the bottom half of the inning when she rocketed a solo home run over the center field fence.

Taylor Slade (5-0) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Blue Raiders as she tossed four strikeouts while allowing just six hits.

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 5, Cumberlands 4

The final game of the series was a different story for the Blue Raiders than the rest of the weekend as they found themselves trailing 4-0 after the top of the sixth inning. Cumberlands was able to score one run in second, third, fifth and sixth inning to build their lead as they limited the potent Lindsey Wilson offensive attack to just two hits across the first five innings.

Boursaw led off the sixth inning as she singled to shallow left as Lyric Houston then come on to pinch run. Kalli Harris would keep things going when she doubled to deep right-center, advancing Houston to third.

Cassie Matlock reached on a walk to load the bases as Makea-Al Kaluau would then reach on a fielder's choice when Houston was forced out at home on a ground ball hit to the shortstop.

A Luckett grounded out during the next at-bat on a play that would allow Harris to score Lindsey Wilson first run of the contest.

Lauren Lett would come into the game to pinch-hit and she produced a doubled to deep right-center field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 4-4. Lett would advance to third on the play when the Patriots tried to throw out Clark at home who scored all the way from first.

Pilgrim would give LWC the lead for good when she drove in Lett from third with a single to left field.

Abby Whelan started the game in the circle for the Blue Raiders going 4-1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits and two strikeouts. Annabelle Ramirez (6-0) would close out the game and pick up the win after recording three strikeouts and allowing three hits.
