Carol Gossage honored for outstanding leadership

by Calen McKinney

Campbellsville High School's former cheerleading coach Carol Gossage will be honored next month for her outstanding leadership skills.

Kentucky High School Coaches Association gives an annual award in honor of the association's first - and only - female executive director Brigid DeVries.

The award is given to a female who has shown outstanding leadership in their position with student athletes in Kentucky. Gossage is this year's award recipient.

She received her award at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's state girls' basketball tournament Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Gossage, known as Mrs. G, was the cheerleading coach at Campbellsville High School for 31 years. She has coached for a total of 47 years.

Gossage retired from teaching after 31 years of service in public education, teaching health/physical education, general science and anatomy.

For the last 12 years of her career, Gossage was Campbellsville Independent Schools' evaluator.

Gossage's cheerleading squads competed for 15 years in District competition.

Under her leadership, Gossage's squads won the Kentucky Association of Pep Organization Sponsors 20th District championship 14 times, with one runner-up title.

Gossage's squads won KAPOS 5th Region championships 13 times, with two runner-up titles.

Gossage also led a gymnastics squad to a KAPOS state championship.

Her squads were also in the Universal Cheerleaders Association national finals seven times, were UCA camp/dance champions seven years in a row and were named UCA camp cheer champions on 10 occasions. She also led squads to five YMCA state championships.

Not only did Gossage lead cheerleading squads, she also served in other coaching capacities at CHS.

She started the first girls' basketball team in 1975 and led the team for one year, finishing as the 20th District runner-up.

Gossage also coached the CHS girls' track team for eight years.

She is currently the cheerleading coach at Campbellsville University.
