Reminder: Statewide Tornado Safety Drill is this morning

As part of Severe Weather Awareness week, March 1 - 7, 2019, a statewide tornado drill will be conducted at approximately 10:07amET/9:07amCT, on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.

The National Weather Service (NWS), in partnership with Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM), Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee, and Kentucky Broadcasters Association, will issue a test tornado warning message.

Mike Keltner, Director of Adair County Emergency Management, reminds everyone that the Adair County's warning sirens will sound along with the drill.

Tornado Terminology:
  • Tornado Watch: Weather conditions could lead to the formation of severe storms and tornadoes. Be Prepared. Know your safe location. Be ready to act quickly if a Warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching.

  • Tornado Warning: A tornado has been spotted or indicated by weather radar, meaning a tornado is occurring or expected soon. Take Action: There is immenent danger to live and property. Immediately seek refuge in the safest location possible.

  • Tornado Emergency: An exceedingly rare situation with a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage due to a confirmed violent tornado. Take Action: There is imminent danger to life and property. Immediately seek refuge in the safest location possible.

Know your Tornado Safe Places

Be prepared for severe weather. Designate a tornado sheltering area in an interior room on the lowest level of a building and away from windows. Basements are best, but if there is no basement, choose an interior bathroom, closet or other enclosed space on the lowest level of a building.

It's best to seek shelter in a safe building or basement. A highway overpass does not provide safety from a tornado.
