Lindsey Wilson Wrestling wins MSC Tournament Championship

Four Blue Raiders claim individual titles

Bowling Green, KY - The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team captured the team title at the Mid-South Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday at the Michael O Buchanon Park Gymnasium.

The Blue Raiders collected 145 total team points to claim the championship for the second time in program history, outscoring second-place No.4 Cumberlands (KY) by 12.5 points on the day.

Four Blue Raiders collected individual MSC Championship titles after finishing atop their respective weight classes. Brady Moser (133-pounds), Trent Johnson (141), Brett Bradford (165) and Brandon Reed (HW) all claimed their respective championships as Lindsey Wilson went 4-of-5 in championship bouts. With the victories, each Blue Raider also claimed First Team All-MSC honors and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Des Moines, Iowa.


Latrell Davis (149) also advanced to a championship bout but would fall in the match to finish in second place. With the result, he earned Second Team All-MSC honors and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.

In total nine Lindsey Wilson wrestlers earned national championship qualifying bids for their efforts.

The first individual title of the day came from Moser (No. 11 at 133). The senior opened the championship with a bye and then defeated Austin Plumlee of Cumberland via pin 1:13 into the second period. He then took down Marvin Galette (No. 14 at 133) of Campbellsville on an 8-2 decision before taking the championship with a 5-1 decision victory over Kolten Randaz of Campbellsville.

After a first-round bye, Johnson (No. 5 at 141) got his championship run started with a commanding 13-5 major decision victory over Chasen Brown of Cumberlands. In the semifinals, he won 1:43 into the first frame when his opponent Alema Favors of Cumberland was forced to retire due to injury. The freshman closed out his day with a 7-5 decision victory over Southeastern's Ethan Owen (No. 9 at 141) to capture the 141-pound championship.

Bradford (No. 6 at 165) then took his turn to claim an individual title, his coming at 165-pounds. The senior dominated the weight class, recording two pins and one major decision. He started thing off with a bye before pinning Mathew Sells of Cumberland in 1:59 of the first period. In the semifinals, Bradford shut out Osvani Ley (No. 16 at 165), winning on a 13-0 major decision. Bradford continued his dominance in the championship match when he pinned Kyle Kirkham of Southeastern 30 seconds into the second period.

Reed (No. 1 at Heavyweight) claimed Lindsey Wilson's final individual championship of the day. He first defeated Brandon Hill (No. 15 at HW) of Life on a pin with nine seconds left in the match to open his day and then tacked on a 13-4 major decision over Grayson Wathall of Cumberland. Reed won on a 3-1 decision against Aaron Johnson (No. 7 at HW) of Cumberland in the semifinals. He took first place when he defeated Quandre Chisolm (No. 6 at HW), also of Cumberlands, on a tight 3-2 decision.

Davis (No. 7 at 149) received a bye in the first round and then won on a pin over Dean Esquibel of Brewton-Parker in 2:48 of the first period. He carried that momentum into the semifinals as he took down Jake Watters (No. 9 at 194) of Southeastern on a commanding 12-4 major decision victory. Davis was pinned in the championship match by Cumberlands Tres Leon (No. 1 at 149).

Derrick Smallwood (No. 6 at 157) Defeated Lee Johnson of Midway on a pin 40 seconds into the second period of the quarterfinals but would fall to the consolation bracket with a tough 9-7 sudden victory-1 loss to Dylan Chatterton (No. 8 at 165) of Southeastern. He then advanced to the third-place bout when LWC teammate Mark Taijeron medically forfeited the match. Smallwood took third place on a 6-3 decision victory over Bobby Ehman of Cumberlands.

Before forfeiting to Smallwood, Taijeron (No. 17 at 157) fell in his first match of the day to Ehman on a close 3-2 decision. He then battled his way to the fifth-place bout with a 4-2 decision over Chandler Woenker of Campbellsville and a 10-2 major decision over Joshua Teaster of Cumberland. In the fifth-place bout, the senior took down Michael Diemer of Campbellsville on a 10-4 decision.

Lucas Miozza (No. 18 at 184) opened his day with a bye and then fell to the consolation bracket with a tough 3-1 sudden victory-1 loss to Jason Davis (No. 10 at 184) of Southeastern. Miozza received another bye and then defeated two straight opponents for a spot in the third-place bout. The senior first pinned Isaiah McDougal of Midway in just 1:19 and then took down Aaron Mosley of Campbellsville on a 7-5 decision. He would fall in the third-place match to Max Emerson of Cumberlands on a 10-4 decision to take fourth place.

Raynel Brown captured fifth place in the heavyweight class. He shutout Jimsher Sidhu (No. 19 at HW) of Life on a 10-0 major decision to open his day and then won on a close 2-1 decision against Silas Root of Southeastern. He fell in back-to-back matches to top-ranked NAIA opponents, landing him in the fifth place bout where he was able to defeat Brandon Hill of Life on a 6-0 decision.

Avery Buckman (No. 18 at 197) took home a sixth-place finish after opening his day with a bye and then fell in his next match to the consolation bracket. He defeated Midway's Ray Karl Irving on a 6-0 decision before dropping his final to matches of the day to take home a sixth-place finish.

Cagen Wallace started his day with a win over Michael Parker who forfeited the match. Wallace then fell to the consolation bracket on a 13-7 decision to Devaughn Sapien (No. 10 at 125) of Life. Wallace won on another forfeiture before defeating Edward Barratt of Southeastern on a 7-2 decision. Wallace would then fall in back-to-back matches to take sixth place.

Smallwood, Taijeron, Miozza, and Brown all also earned automatic qualifying bids to the NAIA National Tournament with their results at the MSC Championship.

The four Lindsey Wilson individual champions were the most from a single institution as no other school had more than three.

Cumberlands finished second with 132.5 points, No. 3 Life placed third with 128, No. 16 Campbellsville took fourth with 106 points and No. 15 Southeastern finished in fifth with 100.5 points. Cumberland (Tenn.) finished sixth after compiling 71.5 points and Brewton-Parker (Ga.) was seventh with 58.5 points. Midway (KY) rounded out the team standings with nine team points.

The Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Year, MSC Freshman Wrestler of the Year, MSC Coach of the Year, MSC Wrestler of the Tournament and MSC Champions of Character recipients will be handed out on Sunday at the conference's wrestling banquet.

The nine automatic Lindsey Wilson qualifiers now begin preparations for the NAIA Wrestling National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa beginning on March 1, while other Blue Raider grapplers must wait to see if they are awarded a national at-large bid.
