Teacher passes on school pictures to nephew Sammy Hughes

Teacher Evelyn Hughes comes from the Statons and the Hugheses who were hard working, church oriented conservative Baptist families in Adair and Russell Counties in KY. -- Her nephew shares a bit of her story

Sammy Hughes, teacher at Adair County Middle School, shared keepsake pictures passed down by his Aunt Evelyn Hughes, an Adair County teacher who kept albums containing school pictures many of her students had given her. He brought them to a recent meeting of the Adair Heritage Association at the Adair Public Library.

She taught first at Knifley, then Flatwoods Rosenwald School and then John Adair fourth and fifth grades.



She was the youngest of seven children born to Samuel Zack Hughes and Effie Staton Hughes of the Rockhouse Bottom/Crocus areas of Russell and Adair Counties.

Sammy Hughes said there was a lot of Native American heritage on the Staton side, Evelyn's grandmother spoke Cherokee.

He said the Statons and the Hugheses were hard working, church oriented conservative Baptists.
