CMS bill now a law, advisor inducted into Hall of Fame

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Middle School students were honored with several awards at the Kentucky Youth Assembly session on December 3 and 4, 2018. The school's Kentucky YMCA Youth Association chapter attended the annual program, which allows students to serve as a part of a model state government.

As a whole, the group received a premiere delegation award. Several students presented a bill defining puppy mills, and it was signed into law.

Bill authors were sixth-graders Dezarae Washington and Logan England and seventh-graders Diego Noyola, Chloe Thompson, Angelica Seng, Grace Tungate and Brianna Dobson.

Haylee Allen, an eighth-grader, ran for the governor office.

She advanced to the second round, and was named one of the Top 6 of the 11 candidates.

Ronin Smith, an eighth-grader, was ranked highly among advisors and Y-Club staff members and served as a doorkeeper at the House of Representatives in the state capitol.

Levi Dicken, an eighth-grader, was chosen to serve as a clerk in the House of Representatives.

Alexis Sharp, a seventh-grader, served as a clerk in the Bluegrass Senate.

And seventh-grader Zachary Akin received an outstanding delegate award.

Robbilyn Speer, one of the CMS Y-Club advisors, was named to the Y-Club Advisor Hall of Fame for her years of dedication and service to the club.

Her mother, Jan Speer, a sixth-grade teacher at CMS, and several of Speer's former Y-Club members, who are now Campbellsville High School students, attended her induction ceremony.

KYA offers students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills and articulate their beliefs while engaging constructively with their peers from around the Commonwealth.

CMS students attending the KYA convention include sixth-graders Logan England, Jaclyn Jackson, Mackenzie Negron, Gabriel Noyola, Dezarae Washington and Havana Whitaker; seventh-graders Zachary Akin, Karlie Cox, Brianna Dobson, Hunter Falls, Ellington Gowin, Lance Knifley, Diego Noyola, Conner Rinehart, Angelica Seng, Alexis Sharp, Grace Taylor and Chloe Thompson; and eighth-graders Haylee Allen, Levi Dicken, Whitney Frashure, Leigh Hicks, Mikaela Scharbrough and Ronin Smith.
