Harlee Smock is Swimming Champions of Character recipient

By Chris Wells

Kingsport, TN - Lindsey Wilson senior Harlee Smock has been named the 2018-19 Mid-South Conference Champions of Character Award recipient for women's swimming, the conference office announced on Wednesday night at MSC swimming banquet.

Smock was selected from a group of nine women's swimmers. Each institution competing this weekend at the MSC Championships is permitted to nominate one swimmer for the honor.

The Columbia, KY, native, boasts a 3.79 grade point average, earning Academic All Mid-South Conference honors -- announced earlier this week by the MSC. Smock will also be recognized as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete this season at the national championships.

Smock is pleased with the culture of the Lindsey Wilson swimming team and how she has helped shape that culture.

"Our team has created a culture of a true family while demonstrating compassion for one another," Smock said. "Just as families do, we struggle and have disagreements but, in the end, we take care of one another in and out of the pool."

Smock quotes Martin Luther King, Jr., trying to live up to his, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is 'What are we doing for others?'"

"This quote encompasses my role on the team because I want what is best for the team and for my teammates," Smock said. "I try to help set examples not only in practice but in school, by supporting them when I can to help them to succeed."

Lindsey Wilson head coach Alicia Kemnitz says Smock is an inspiration to the team for everything she has endured during her time at Lindsey Wilson.

"Harlee has served as a source of inspiration for our team, and has represented the Champions of Character initiative in her everyday life," Kemnitz said. "Despite two season-ending surgeries during her career, Harlee showed incredible fortitude by attending every single practice. She made her presence known as she supported her teammates during difficult sets, and helped the coaching staff with extra duties.

"Her dedication to the team over the past four years has truly been unmatched," Kemnitz added. "In my 15 years of coaching, I don't know if I have ever witnessed someone be as selfless and team-focused as Harlee Smock."

Smock is the second consecutive Blue Raider to earn the award, as selected by the Mid-South Conference Champions of Character Committee. Caroline Cobb received the award last season.

Each Mid-South Conference sport names a champion of character recipient during their respective conference championship. At the end of the academic year, a male and female MSC Champions of Character winner will be selected from the pool of sport winners.
