Officer involved shooting after pursuit in Hardin Co.

By Trooper Scotty R. Sharp

Elizabethtown, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) investigates an officer involved shooting involving a trooper in Hardin County. On January 26, 2019 at approximately 2:11 A.M. EST, KSP Post 4 was notified by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) that they were investigating an armed robbery in the Boston Community of Nelson County and that the suspect had left the scene. NCSO was able to provide a description of the vehicle and suspect.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 4:23 A.M. EST, a KSP Post 4 Trooper observed the vehicle and driver matching the description given by the NCSO traveling westbound at the twelve (12) mile marker on the Bluegrass Parkway.

Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however the vehicle failed to stop and continued toward Elizabethtown reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Tire deflation devices (Stingers) were successfully deployed, deflating the front right tire. The pursuit exited the Bluegrass Parkway and merged onto northbound I-65 before exiting at the 94-mile marker. After exiting I-65, the vehicle turned right onto Bardstown Road (US 62) and then turned into the Waffle House restaurant parking lot where the vehicle struck the front of the building causing damage to the structure.

Upon making contact with the driver, he failed to obey officer's commands and at some point, a trooper discharged his firearm striking the subject in the leg.

The suspect was identified as Justin Robert Hardin (36) of Orange Beach, AL. Hardin was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

Hardin was charged with the following:
  • Speeding 26 mph over
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to or Improper Signal
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st Degree (Motor Vehicle)
  • Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree (Police Officer)
  • Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Operating Motor Vehicle Under The Influence, 1st Offense
  • Criminal Mischief, 1st Degree
KSP was assisted at the scene by Hardin County Sheriff's Office, Elizabethtown Police Department and the Elizabethtown Police Department. The officer involved shooting is still under investigation by KSP Critical Incident Response Team. The armed robbery complaint is under investigation by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office.

NOTE: An arrest is not a finding of guilt. An individual placed under arrest is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.
