LWC men top Shawnee State 84-67

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team was efficient shooting in their Mid-South Conference matchup as they rolled over Shawnee State (Ohio) by a final score of 84-67 at Biggers Sports Center on Thursday night. Matthew Eldridge had a career day, recording his second double-double of the season after scoring a career-high 23 points and adding 12 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday when they take on Pikeville (KY) at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY, starting at 4pmCT.

The Blue Raiders (10-9, 1-3 MSC) shot 47.3 percent from the field and went 11-of-27 from deep while holding the Bears (10-7, 2-2 MSC) to making just 38.7 of their attempts during the game. Lindsey Wilson added a 38-33 rebound advantage as they managed seven steal while forcing 11 turnovers.

JR Adams finished the game with 16 points, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Kel Stotts had 15 points and Shakaris Laney was the final Blue Raider in double figures, finishing with 13 points.

Lindsey Wilson scored the game's first points of the night on a Matthew Eldridge three pointer - his first of four in the half -- and never looked back. The Blue Raiders managed to build their lead to 10-6 with 16:27 on the clock and would go on to outscore the Bears 18-7 over the next 7:14 to take a commanding 28-13 lead.

Shawnee State clawed their way back however, to trail LWC by seven at 30-23 with 6:28 to play in the half.

Two made foul shots and back-to-back threes by Eldridge over the next two minutes would push the Blue Raider lead back to double-digits at 10 points. Kel Stotts and Eldridge added threes late in the half to give LWC a nine point advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.

Lindsey Wilson shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the first half as they connected on 7-of-13 three point attempts. Shawnee State was also efficient from the floor as they shot 45.2 percent from the floor and connected on 7-of-14 three point attempts. LWC held a slight 18-15 advantage on the glass as Lindsey Wilson managed three steals.

The Blue Raiders opened the second half connecting on 3-of-4 attempts from the field as Shakaris Laney capped off the early scoring spurt with a made three pointer. Shawnee State kept pace with the Blue Raiders in the early goings as LWC would lead 55-45 with 16:49 on the scoreboard.

Sloppy play took over the game during the next few possession for both teams, as the Blue Raiders went 0-of-2 from the floor and turned the ball over twice and Shawnee State went 0-of-3 from the field and turned the ball over once. Shawnee State would break the scoring drought, to cut the LWC lead to eight, but the Blue Raiders outscored the Bears 9-1 to take a 64-48 lead with just under 12 minutes to play.

Shawnee State managed a 5-0 run, lasting to the 10:50 mark but the Blue Raiders quickly rallied back with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 16 point lead with 9:49 left in regulation.

Lindsey Wilson went on to extended their lead to as many as 22 - their largest leads of the game - twice over the final nine minutes of action as LWC would defeat Shawnee State by a final score of 84-67.
