LWC Wrestling defeats Cumberland 29-11

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team moves to 3-0 in Mid-South Conference action after they defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 29-11 on Tuesday night at Biggers Sports Center. Lindsey Wilson managed to pick up six wins on the night as five of them produced extra team points and two Blue Raiders pinned their opponents.

Cagen Wallace (No. 14 at 125) took on Austin Plumlee to open the match and jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first period via two takedowns. Late in the second frame Wallace recorded his third takedown to extend his lead to 6-0 before taking the match on a 10-1 major decision.

Lindsey Wilson picked an additional six team point in the match when Cumberland forfeited the 133-pound bout. Brady Moser (No. 15 at 133) then wrestled up a weight class where he squared off against Keshawn Laws (No. 17 at 141) and fell on a 7-3 decision.

The Blue Raiders would take a 10-2 lead after Cumberland was deducted one team point after an unsportsmanlike penalty.

Trent Johnson (No. 5 at 141), also wrestling up a weight class, battled Anthony Maia to a 0-0 tie after one period and would fall behind in the match when Maia earned an escape point after choosing bottom to start the second. Johnson leveled the match at 1-1 with just over a minute to wrestle but Maia responded, scoring takedown moments later.

Johnson was again able to escape trimming Maia's lead to just one, but was caught trying to secure a takedown and fell on a 5-2 decision.

Mark Taijeron found himself with an 8-1 advantage over Josh Teaster following the first period of his match after he scored a four point near fall as time expired. Taijeron continued to dominate his match as he would take an 11-1 lead into the final period before taking the match on a 14-3 major decision.

Derrick Smallwood (No. 8 at 157) then took down Mathew Sells on a pin in 6:45. Smallwood controlled the pace in the first period, using two takedowns during the final minute to take a 4-1 lead. The freshman then scored three more points in the second and would increase his lead to 11 in the third before he pinned Sells to the mat with just 15 seconds on the clock.

With four matches to go the Blue Raider had a 20-5 advantage.

Brett Bradford (No. 10 at 174) and Nathan Walton (No. 12 at 174) exchanged blows in their top tier matchup at 174-pounds. Bradford opened the match with a great first period jumping out to a 10-4 advantage but Walton battled his was back to trail by just two points at 10-8 entering the final stanza.

The two exchanged two point reversals in the early goings of the third period but a stalling call on Bradford and a riding time point forced overtime. Walton scored a takedown in sudden victory-1 to take the match on a 14-12 decision.

Lucas Miozza challenged John Olivieri (No. 19 at 184) on an upset bid after the two were knotted a 1-1 early in the third period of action but Olivieri would ultimately defeat Miozza on a 4-2 decision, cutting the LWC lead to 20-11.

Avery Buckman (No. 13 at 197) dominated his opponent Nawin Hyers scoring multiple near fall points before ultimately pinning Hyers to the mat in just 2:43 during the first period.

With the Blue Raiders leading 26-11, Raynel Brown wrestled the final match of the night and quickly scored a two point takedown just eight seconds into the bout against Grayson Walthall and was able to ride out the remaining time in the period. Brown extended his lead to 4-1 in the second before ultimately taking the match on a 5-3 decision.

Lindsey Wilson hits the mats again later this week on Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Missouri Valley College Invite in Marshall, Missouri.
