Joseph Parnell a worthy, dedicated and loyal servant, retires Sunday morning December 30, 2018, he stood before the congregation as he had for the past 3224 Sundays and announced that he was retiring after 62 years and passing the responsibility of Sunday School Superintendent on to another. By Terry Partin In 1956 at the young age of nineteen Joseph Parnell stepped forth to take on the duties of Sunday School Superintendent at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. No one could have foreseen that he would continue to serve in that capacity as twelve Presidents completed fifteen Presidential terms. He served tirelessly alongside 16 different Pastors over the years. In 1963 he was called on to teach the Adult Sunday School Class. Teaching was his true calling. His Sunday School lessons were well researched, based on scripture and always extremely informative. He continued to teach his class for 50 years preparing over 2600 lessons plans. During this time he raised a family and completed a career as a beloved and respected history teacher at Adair County High School. He was also the unpaid self proclaimed volunteer who made a weekly visit to the Church on Saturday mornings to adjust the heating or air conditioning so that Sunday mornings would offer a comfortable Worship experience for all those in attendance. Sunday morning December 30th Mr. Parnell stood before the congregation as he had for the past 3224 Sundays and announced that he was retiring after 62 years and passing the responsibility of Sunday School Superintendent on to another. Pastor Mike Moon describes Mr. Parnell as an inspiration to others and a worthy, dedicated and loyal servant of God. All those who know Him will readily agree.
