Letter: Keep and preserve the Greensburg Street entry sign By Joyce Coomer . . . on Greensburg Road . . . yes, it is old. Yes it needs cleaned and repainted. And since it says "Chamber of Commerce" on it, one would assume that the chamber was the party responsible for the erection of this sign several years ago. While it's unsightly at the moment, it is a bit of local history that I feel needs to be preserved. Surely there is some kindly person in the county who would donate paint. If paint is donated, surely there is some other kindly people who would clean the sign. After a thorough cleaning, perhaps some other kindly people could repaint the sign. With today's technology, the logos of organizations that are on the sign wouldn't have to be repainted -- the logos could be printed onto vinyl and adhered to the sign. There are several worthy civic organizations in the county that deserve to be advertised. I know the first thing that's going to be said is "It's old and ugly." After that, most likely, will be "It's too dangerous." (The use of a ladder would be necessary.) Then . . . and this one really irks me . . . "We need a professional-looking sign." Whatever the excuses, I think the sign should be preserved. Too many bits and pieces (and some major pieces) of our history are disappearing because too many people are infatuated with new and shiny and expensive and consider anything more than ten years old unworthy of consideration. We need to stop and consider our county's uniqueness. Why do we want to become a carbon copy of every other small town in the state? Let's keep our uniqueness intact so that our children won't have to learn of the uniqueness from stories their grandparents tell them about what their grandparents had and saw and knew of in the county.
