Columbia Christmas Parade 2018

Click headline for photo album from this year's Christmas Parade.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." It may be the unofficial creed of the US Postal Service, but it could also describe the hard-working volunteers and participants who helped Columbia's Christmas Parade officially kick off the Christmas season on Saturday.

The parade was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 1st, and had to be postponed when severe weather loomed. Yesterday's forecast gave early hope, but the weather never quite cooperated. That didn't stop onlookers and participants, however, and the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event went on as planned.

First place in the float competition went to Damon's CTA and Froedge Trucking for "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer," with Tara Coomer as "Grandma." Second place was the Adair County High School FFA for their float re-creating the Polar Express. Third Place in the float division went to Great Oaks.

Christmas Parade Nativity

2018-12-16 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler.
Tiffany writes, "A simple reminder of what Christmas is about. Sorcha Wooten, 13, and Mathew Townsend, 14, did an excellent job portraying Mary and Joseph on the Columbia Baptist Church float. Despite the typical number of onlookers that line the streets of downtown Columbia, the number of float entries were down this year almost certainly due to rain. Unruly weather or not, it begs the question - does it really feel like Christmas in Columbia without our famous parade?"

Grandma takes first place

First Place in the float competition went to Damon's CTA and Froedge Trucking for their spectacular rendition of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer". Tara Coomer played "Grandma" and did a wonderful job dramatizing the part as she was continuously run over by the rigged up deer. Laughter was heard throughout the parade route as the float went perfectly with this year's theme "Songs of Christmas". It's important to note, no grandmas were actually run over or injured by deer during the parade.

Santa and Mrs. Claus

2018-12-16 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler.
Tiffany writes, "SANTA - The big man himself, along with his better half Mrs. Claus, waved to wide eyed, wonder filled children during the Columbia Christmas parade route. As with tradition, the happy couple rode on the back of a firetruck. Surely, he'll return to our small town on the eve of December 24th."

Watching the Christmas Parade

2018-12-16 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler.
Tiffany writes, "The race was on. Nothing tastes better to a youngster than captured parade candy - it's free, thrown own in giant handfuls, and quickly scooped up by droves of waiting children. The youth photographed were caught up in the moment of collecting sugary goodness, under the careful eye of their parents of course."
