Today's ice coating of limbs and wires feels like an ice storm By Linda Waggener While enjoying some soup around noon I was interrupted by a tremendous thud. The soup forgotten, I checked inside the house to see who or what might have fallen, then looked out the windows and saw the problem. A huge limb lay on the ground at the Arnold Waggener property line. It was a casualty of the weight of today's ice coating the trees and ground coupled with its age. When I came here, the neighbors said we'd get along just fine so long as I didn't bother the glorious Elm line tree. I promised and have never touched it. I'm sorry Mother Nature broke its limb in today's ice storm. It feels like an ice storm because of the coatings on all the limbs, blades of grass, vehicles, and because of the popping sounds that come from limbs and wires loaded with ice. The U.S. National Weather Service defines an ice storm as a storm which results in the accumulation of at least 0.25-inch of ice on exposed surfaces. This story was posted on 2018-12-09 12:55:21
