Letter: drive alert, drive carefully no matter when or where

By Joyce Coomer

Years ago, when we purchased a brand new Ford Ranger, several people asked me if I worried about someone damaging it with their vehicle. My answer: I drive as if a bomb might drop in front of me any second.

I still follow the "bomb might drop" philosophy of driving and it has helped me avoid accidents several times.

While driving too fast in congested areas is hazardous I am more concerned with people on cell phones. From watching the movement of vehicles whose drivers are talking on a cell phone, it is apparent they are paying no attention to anything but the phone (or other electronic communication device).

I am hoping that eventually the state lawmakers will pass a state-wide law banning the use of any type of electronic communication device while driving (even supposedly hands-free ones), and if that doesn't come about, at least individual cities and counties pass their own ordinances concerning such things.

We all need to be alert and careful while driving, no matter when or where. It's the only way to stay safe on the roads.
