The Christmas in Columbia Story 2018

By Linda Waggener

It was just like Landon Edwards said at the Rotary Club breakfast, "Cancel the parade and the weather will clear up - don't cancel the parade and the predicted storms will happen."

Rain continued coming down hard outside as the aroma of biscuits and sausage filled the warm Columbia Baptist Church fellowship hall and kitchen.

Parade entrants, set to be the evening entertainment, waited all around the county for notification - should they continue preparations or change their plans?

The Parade Committee members of the Chamber of Commerce promised a decision by nine and poured over weather reports under the burden of having to let the evening parade go on as planned, or call it off due to predicted weather conditions - rain on and off with possible storms right at the hour the parade was to begin its slow trek down Jamestown Street and around the square.

The breakfast was well attended, spirits were high, but as well as they could tell, the weather could still be bad at Parade time so it was called off for the evening and rescheduled to December 15th.

The vendors mall in the historic courthouse was well attended even in the heavy rain. According to organizer Cayce Davenport, the crowd was steady the whole time. The Christmas Carnival fun activities and Santa's visit at the Lindsey Wilson College Holloway Health and Wellness Center went very well, too. The rain did drop off in the afternoon and the sun even peeked out between heavy gray clouds once or twice.

At the appointed hour of the cancelled Parade, I drove up to the old industrial park where participants would have been lining up had it not been rescheduled. There was a noticable wind but it was light and I thought to myself, we could have made it.

The next moment, lightning streaked across the western sky over Columbia and I thought, no, not a single parent would've been comfortable with their child on a float in the parade lineup with lightening on the horizon. So the right decision had been made.

No major storm happened, thankfully, and Columbia still has a Christmas Parade to look forward to on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 6pmCT.

Merry Christmas!
