Letter: More on Bert Rosenbaum, Ms. Willie Jim Crawhorn writes: Very interesting. Never knew there was a West Point graduate from Adair County. Would like to know more about him. I had a high school (1960-1964) teacher Ms Willie Rosenbaum, very nice lady. Any relation? --JimComments re photo 81492 Bert Stanford Rosenbaum Fairplay KY Jim, thanks for writing. We reached out to Dave again, and got a great rundown of the Rosenbaum history in Adair County: By Dave Rosenbaum Bert was one of my grandfather Leslie Rosenbaum's six children, Elwood, my Dad Stanley, Bert, Violet. Harold and Cecil. Cecil died as an infant. The remaining children grew up at Fairplay where my grandfather was the owner of the general store that my Dad subsequently owned. All of the kids attended Yellow Hammer School. ( you can still see Bert's initials, BSR, carved into the weatherboarding at the rear of the Yellow Hammer School), Elwood attended Berea College and the University of Kentucky College of Law. He practiced law in Lexington until his retirement. My Dad Stanley attended Lindsey Wilson and taught school in Adair County for several years before becoming owner of the Fairplay Store at my grandfather's death. Violet lived in Chicago where she worked for Greyhound. Harold attended Berea College and Harvard Medical School. He returned to Lexington and was the Chief of Radiology at the University of Kentucky Medical School. With regard to Bert, he remained in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Colonel. He was stationed throughout the states and in Europe and North Africa. He retired at Tacoma, Washington and lived the remainder of his life there. I had the graduation date from West Point wrong. He actually graduated in 1941. For those that are interested in that class, I recommend Black '41 by Bill Yenne, available on Amazon. This book follows this class through the War and is a fascinating account of these great men, many of whom did not survive the war. With regard to Miss Willie Rosenbaum, she was a cousin. My great, great grandfather Adam Rosenbaum was the first of the clan to come to Adair County He had seven children including my great grandfather Mitchell Rosenbaum and Willie Rosenbaum's grandfather Elijah Rosenbaum. Elijah's son Finis A. Rosenbaum was Miss Willie's father. You can see F.A. Rosenbaum's name on one of the stained glass windows at the Columbia Christian Church.
