LWC Volleyball beats Georgetown in five, clinches Mid-South title

By Chris Wells

Lindsey Wilson volleyball wrapped up its sixth-straight Mid-South Conference regular-season title tonight with a five-set win over Georgetown University at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (26-3, 13-0 in the MSC) earn the conference's top seed in next week's MSC Tournament in Bowling Green, KY, with the 25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 19-17 win. Lindsey Wilson concludes its 2018 home schedule with its 71st consecutive win at Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6pmCT on Thursday, Nov. 1, as the Blue Raiders travel to Campbellsville University for the regular-season finale.

No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson overcame five match points in the decisive set.

The Blue Raiders trailed 14-12 when Grace Blomstedt provided one of her season-high 15 kills. Lindsey Wilson tied the set at 14-14 -- one of 10 ties in the final stanza -- on a Georgetown error.

The Tigers (17-12, 9-4) would have set points at 15-14, 16-15, and 17-16 before the Blue Raiders closed the match with three straight points.

Elly Burke tied the match at 17-17 with her 11th kill and Blomstedt added the final kill of her Biggers Sports Center career to give Lindsey Wilson its first and only match point. Blomstedt then ended the match in fitting style, with her eighth block of the match to give Lindsey Wilson the five-set win.

Paulina Sobolewska and Klara Mikelova joined Blomstedt with 15 kills each, giving the Blue Raiders four players with double-digit kills. The 15 kills were also a season high for Sobolewska.

Sobolewska (16 digs), Burke (18 digs), and Mikelova (25 digs) all finished with double-doubles in the win.

Lindsey Wilson needed a comeback to win the opening set 25-23. The Blue Raiders trailed by as many as six points (9-3) early in the set and 19-16 when they made their charge.

Lindsey Wilson scored the next four points to take its first lead of the set (21-20) and led 23-20 before the Tigers scored the next two points to cut the deficit to one point. Lindsey Wilson responded with back-to-back points for the first-set win.

A balanced attack propelled Lindsey Wilson to the 1-0 lead as six Blue Raiders recorded multiple kills in the set. Defensively, Lindsey Wilson recorded six team blocks led by Blomstedt and Mikelova with three assisted blocks each. The Blue Raiders ended the match with 13 team blocks.

Lindsey Wilson dominated the early stages of the second set en route to a 25-18 win. The Blue Raiders sprinted out to a 16-5 lead and extended their lead to as many as 14 points (20-6). But the Tigers took advantage of eight Lindsey Wilson errors to climb within five points (23-18) before the Blue Raiders closed out the set.

Blomstedt and Mikelova led the Blue Raider attack in the set with four kills each without an error. Autumn Proctor added a pair of kills and 11 assists in the frame. Proctor recorded a career-high 52 assists in the win while adding nine digs and five kills.

The Lindsey Wilson block continued to rack up numbers, limiting the Tigers to a .073 hitting percentage in the set.

Despite out-hitting the Tigers in the third frame, .289 to .143, Lindsey Wilson dropped its first set of the season in conference play 26-24. Emma Pike led the Tigers with seven kills in the set to pull Georgetown within a 2-1 deficit in the match. Pike and Ashton Meckle each finished with match-high 17 kills.

The dropped set was also Lindsey Wilson's first loss in October.

Georgetown carried the third-set momentum into the fourth with a 25-21 win to even the match at 2-2. Lindsey Wilson had its worst attacking set of the match, committing six hitting errors to post a .098 attacking percentage. The Tigers recorded five more kills than the Blue Raiders in the frame to hit .233.

Lindsey Wilson closed the match with an attack advantage over the Tigers -- .244 to .183.

The Blue Raiders -- playing in their fifth five-set match of the season -- scored three of the set's first four points and led 8-6 at the change. Lindsey Wilson looked to be in control, leading 10-7, only to have the Tigers win four straight points to take their first lead of the set at 11-10.

Georgetown extended its lead to 13-11 and 14-12 to set up the finish.
