LWC Men's Basketball falls 77-74 at Harris Stowe State

By Chris Wells

St. Louis, MO - Lindsey Wilson men's basketball dropped its season opener today with a 77-74 setback to Harris Stowe State (Mo.) at Board of Regents Gym.

Jason Carter scored with 1:59 left in regulation play to give the No. 25 Blue Raiders (0-1) a 74-72 lead. But Lindsey Wilson failed to score again as the Hornets closed with five straight points to escape with the win.

Can Oztamur missed a 3-pointer as time expired in an attempt to extend the game.

Lindsey Wilson overcame a 15-point first-half deficit with a furious rally to head into the break tied at 40-40. The Hornets (1-0) led 22-7 just six minutes into the game and 33-20 with 8:28 left in the half before the Blue Raiders started their march back.

Five different Blue Raiders scored during a three-minute window to tally 10 straight points and cut the deficit to three. Lindsey Wilson closed the half out-scoring Harris Stowe State 20-7 over the final eight minutes.

Lindsey Wilson carried its momentum into the second half scoring the first four points for a 44-40 lead -- the Blue Raiders' largest of the game.

Neither team was able to separate over the final 20 minutes, with the second half featuring five ties and eight lead changes. Six points were the largest lead by either team in the second stanza.

An Oztamur three and a Shakaris Laney basket in the lane tied the game at 68-68 with 3:46 remaining. A little more than a minute later, Carter put the Blue Raiders in front only to have the Hornets answer in the end.

Kel Stotts led the Blue Raiders with 16 points while Laney added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carter, Lys, and Oztamur all finished with nine points each. Harris Stowe State's Deandre Clark scored a game-high 18 points.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2pmCT on Sunday, Nov. 4, as the Blue Raiders host Ohio State-Mansfield.
