LWC women's soccer tops Shawnee State 5-0

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team was able to beat Shawnee State (Ohio) 5-0 on senior night after the Blue Raider offense started clicking in the second half as they managed four goals, with three coming just four minutes apart.

The Blue Raiders (7-3-2, 5-0-1) amassed 26 shots in the game with 14 of their attempts finding their way on target. The LWC defense was just as good on the night as they limited the Bears (5-10-1, 2-5-0 MSC) two just two shots in the match, as only one made its way on goal.

Sina Cavelti recorded two goals on the night as Emelie Liljered and Sanna Svensson both managed a one goal and one assist on the night.

Lindsey Wilson was able to control much of the first half as they outshot Shawnee State 7-0 including 4-0 in shots on goal across the first 25 minutes of action. Although LWC was able to create quality chances the Blue Raiders were unable to sneak one past Bears goalkeeper Michaela Garner early in the contest.

Svennson played a great cross during the 26th minute that found Veronica Kurtz on the right side of the 18-yard box. After a few touches, Kurtz broke free from a Bear defender, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar, erasing the Blue Raider scoring opportunity.

The Blue Raiders were finally able to break through with just over 11 minutes left in the half. Svensson played a perfect ball behind Shawnee State defenders to an open Liljered just inside the 18-yard box. Liljered took two touches before playing the ball off to an open Cavelti who finished into a wide-open goal. The Blue Raiders would carry that lead into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson outshot the Bears 13-1 including 8-1 in shots on goal as LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic was there to deny the only Shawnee State shot on goal in the game.

The Blue Raiders were able to strike quickly in the second half as they managed to score three goals, all just four minutes apart.

Svennson would score the Blue Raiders first goal of the half after Kurtz was fouled inside the 18-yard box, drawing a penalty kick. Svensson would take the ensuing penalty kick during the 51st minute and bury her chance into the lower left corner of the goal, after the Bears goalkeeper dove in the opposite direction.

Just under three minutes later, Liljered would score from 15-yards out on a ball that deflected off the right post and into the goal. Kajsa Conradsen picked up the assist on the play.

Moments later, during the 55th minute the Blue Raiders again managed to find the back of the goal. Cavelti would score her second goal of the game when Amara Safuan played a cross to Caveti who was able to slide a ball near post and past Shawnee State goalkeeper to increase the LWC lead to 4-0.

Emma Lindell added to the Blue Raider lead in the 65th minute. Hannah Schrage managed to create space down the end line and play a ball back into the 18-yard box to Lindell who powered a shot under the crossbar from just 6-yard out.

The Blue Raiders are back in action at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY, on Sunday when they play host to Life University (GA) at 2pmCT.
