Remembering Ed Waggener: A glue that binds our community

By Guy Babin

I saw this scene on our place along a small branch that feeds Cool Springs Creek this morning as I went out to feed the cows and immediately fetched the camera.

I've been looking for something to submit that I know Ed would have appreciated. Although I didn't know Ed Waggener that well, he was considered a friend and was a kindred spirit in many ways. As relative recent transplants from off, Ed was one of several locals who welcomed us generously when we showed up in Adair. Even before we made the move he, through ColumbiaMagazine.com, gave us a sense of belonging, a source of insight, and an awareness of what it means to be a part of this wonderful community.

Ed also indirectly fed my latent desires to write and take pictures. He quite often published my amateurish submissions--imperfections 'n all! I miss him although we only once shared a meal on the square. Approaching the courthouse in my old pickup lately garners a feeling of loss although I rarely actually saw him, or interacted in person during daily travels.

I'd think some sort of modest public remembrance of Ed tastefully placed somewhere in the Town Square would be appropriate, although I'm not sure he'd agree... I believe he had a reach and influence on our area that surpassed most--in the ilk of Janice Holt Giles, and other unique personalities whose passions form a glue that binds our community. Rest easy Ed.
