Traffic safety checkpoint leads to felony arrest

On September 19, 2018 at approximately 11pmCT, Trooper Zach Scott was on routine patrol in the limits of Columbia when he located a stolen Kia Spectra. Trooper Scott attempted to initiate a traffic stop at which time the motorist fled.

The driver fled on foot after losing control of the vehicle and running off the roadway on Hurt Street. Trooper Scott lost visual contact with the subject.

Through reviewing surveillance videos at a local business, Trooper Scott was able to confirm the identity of the driver as 22 year old Dakota Bannigan of Columbia, and obtained warrants against him.


On Tuesday, October 16th, 2018 at approximately 11:53pmCT, Bannigan was located by Trooper Levi Scott at a traffic safety checkpoint location on Fairground Street in Columbia.

Bannigan was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Indiana and fleeing or evading police 1st degree (motor vehicle,) fleeing or evading police 1st degree (on foot,) wanton endangerment 1st, possession of a controlled substance 1st degree 1st offense (methamphetamine,) criminal mischief 1st, possession of drug paraphernalia, receiving stolen property U/$10,000, speeding 26 MPH over speed limit and reckless driving. Bannigan was lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
