CPD Chief Cross spoke on SRO and the need for more in schools

By Linda Waggener

Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross spoke on school safety at the October Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting Tuesday, October 9, 2018. He said he knew everyone present would join him in being passionate about keeping our children safe in school.

The City of Columbia pays for two School Resource Officers (SROs) and the Fiscal Court just approved a third SRO from the County budget as the safety program is being expanded as budgets allow to all four Adair County public schools.

"In my 20 years, things have changed so much," he said, "Now schools have to have sign in sheets, locked doors with buzzers, special arrangements have to be made to pick up children and someone has to man the doors, all because of the terrible things that have happened in schools across our country."

He said school shootings get the most news coverage but there's so much more an SRO has to be trained to handle in order to make schools and school related activities safe from bullying, harassment, sexual abuse, violence, illegal substances, exposure to weapons on school grounds - and we have to be prepared to prevent these.

What can we do? First, pray about it, and then stay on top of police manpower needed to stop crime on the school grounds. Over 35% of students in the county are raised in fatherless homes so the SRO can be an effective advisor and safety trainer for these children as well as working in the capacity of a police officer.
