Notices delayed, but registration can be renewed now

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair, courtesy Lisa Green, Adair County Clerk

Frankfort, KY - Registration renewals typically sent in March to applicable Kentucky vehicle owners have been delayed to mid-April due to a state system issue. Vehicle owners have options to pay registration fees and taxes before receiving the mailed notice, including online renewal or visiting their local county clerk's office.

Kentuckians with vehicle registrations expiring in April 2024 can visit drive.ky.gov to renew online by entering the title number found on a previous year's registration document and their license plate number. Online renewals are not available if previous balances are owed or if insurance information is not on file.

Kentuckians always have the option to pay in person or check balances at their county clerk's office. Those visiting offices ahead of receiving the April notice are asked to bring their ID, proof of insurance and last year's registration document for the same vehicle.

Tommy Druen: High school basketball

Previous Column: The importance of hope

By Tommy Druen

It's often advised not to talk about politics or religion when in polite company. There is merit in that advice as there is no reason to seek out divisions when there is plenty of room for unity. However, today I'm going to violate that and talk about a topic that falls into both categories: high school basketball in Kentucky.

Kentuckians have long been known for our love of college basketball. Despite none having been on the sidelines in over 47 years, figures like Adolph Rupp, Peck Hickman and Ed Diddle are still revered. The rivalries are so intense that even after WKU won their initial game against UK in 1971, it took 19 years for them to schedule another match. Despite both being among the 15 schools with the most wins ever, they have only faced off four times in the regular season.

Purists know that our affinity for college basketball doesn't hold a candle to our love for high school hoops. In Kentucky, there are two types of sports: "ball" and everything else. And, trust me, when someone mentions their grandson plays ball for a school, it's never about golf.

High school basketball in our Commonwealth can be both intense and entertaining, and not just on the court.

Letter: Yield

Mike Watson writes:
Linda, I can see in this photo the nice red "Yield" sign with the Historic Adair County Courthouse as the backdrop. As of this morning there were not Yield signs on either the Jamestown nor the Greensburg entrances to the Public Square. I saw not one, but two, vehicles sail right on through--one from each entry street--the circle of the Square.

I could not say, but wondered if one or both were "from off" and thought they had the right of way. There must be something someone can do...before the undertakers have to be called to the scene.
Mike adds the following update:
By the end of the working day on Wednesday, the Yield sign had been reset at the entrance to the Public Square from Greensburg Street; but the entry from Jamestown Street still had no temporary sign to warn those coming onto the Square that they were to Yield. The vehicle that preceded me this morning did not even slow, and there were at least two vehicles coming around the Historic Courthouse--luckily the lead one was slow enough to avoid hitting the offender--which had an Adair County license tag. Oh well, just be careful lest you be mowed down during you commute this rainy morning.

Letter: What's wrong w/ this picture?

John Howery writes:
What's wrong? I know . . . One of our local law enforcement officers isn't shown falling in behind them to perform a time consuming and thorough (and expensive?) safety inspection on the semi and company and operator --- you know, just as a way to say thanks for supporting our community, its residents and small businesses, as the semis pass through and out of town . . . keeping our streets and roads and vehicles and drivers as safe as possible!
